Wairaka Legend Flashback
Legend of Wairaka Retell
Long ago, Wairaka the daughter of chief Toroa along with the Ngati Awa Tribe travelled throughout the oceans of Aotearoa. Surprisingly, they found a beautiful beach, when the Ngati Awa tribe reached the beach the men went to see if it was safe for the women and children while the children and women stayed on the beautifully carved waka. While the men were walking on the warm sand a sudden huge gust of wind drifted the women and children far from the Island.
Sadly, the children cried and the women scarcely screamed of fear, all of a sudden big, fat, juicy raindrops fell from the sky, everyone thought the boat was going to capsize!
Wisely, Wairaka knew it would be tapu for a woman to hold a paddle, Wairaka made her final decision and grabbed the paddle but with these final words she called out to her ancestors and said “Kia Whakatane au i ahau” which means let me act like a man .
Hello everyone, here is my Wairaka legend retell. For a couple of weeks our class has been retelling the legend of how Wairaka saved her tribe. We have used this table to retell each part in detail.
Have you ever heard the legend of Wairaka?
